- <p> The Cincinnati judge was careful to separate the hero from
- his misdeeds. "Today we are not dealing with the legend," he
- said before sentencing Pete Rose to five months in prison for
- cheating on his taxes. Baseball's record holder for number of
- hits (4,256) was also fined $50,000, and will have to spend
- three months in a halfway house and do 1,000 hours of community
- service. Earlier, in a courtroom only nine blocks from a street
- named in his honor, Rose told the judge that he was "very
- sorry, very shameful to be here today in front of you." Said
- he: "I have no excuses because it's all my fault."
