  18. <p>     The Cincinnati judge was careful to separate the hero from
  19. his misdeeds. "Today we are not dealing with the legend," he
  20. said before sentencing Pete Rose to five months in prison for
  21. cheating on his taxes. Baseball's record holder for number of
  22. hits (4,256) was also fined $50,000, and will have to spend
  23. three months in a halfway house and do 1,000 hours of community
  24. service. Earlier, in a courtroom only nine blocks from a street
  25. named in his honor, Rose told the judge that he was "very
  26. sorry, very shameful to be here today in front of you." Said
  27. he: "I have no excuses because it's all my fault."
